Biography

Gable is a member of the largest labor union in Centre County.  Local Union #8 is
affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.  Gable has served as a
teamster union steward.
Charles R. Gable is currently serving in his fourth year
on the State College Borough Planning Commission
and is serving in his second year on the Centre Region
Planning Commission.
Gable is a ten-year resident of Centre County and
eight-year resident of State College Borough. “After
growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and having
lived in Atlanta, I made a decision to build my life here,
in Central Pennsylvania”, Charles said in a recent
conversation. “I love it here. This is a fantastic place to
live. We have the best of everything: ample outdoor
activities from hunting to hiking to camping, we have
agriculture, we have sports, fine dining, music and entertainment, excellent shopping
options and top notch educational institutions - and generally, all without the large
crowds and the headaches of excessive traffic.”
Prior to his current position at Penn State University in
Environmental Services, Charles was a meteorologist and
broadcaster at AccuWeather. His weather broadcasts
reached millions of listeners in top-40 radio markets
across the country, including radio stations in Chicago,
Detroit, and Charlotte. He was heard locally on Froggy
98 and WRSC.  His written forecasts could be read in the
Centre Daily Times and hundreds of newspapers across
the nation. Gable's professional career began in Atlanta, Georgia. He joined the
weather forecasting team at The Weather Channel in 1994, after graduating from
Penn State University. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology and a
technical elective in communication. Gable is close to completing a masters degree in
Public Administration with specialties in Urban Government, State Administration
and Disaster Mitigation....skills and education that will prove useful in public service.
Charles considers his family the cornerstone of his life. “I thank
God for my father and his parents, who cared for me during
very difficult times and showed me that you get out of life what
you put into it. My grandmother taught me that anything is
possible with a positive attitude and a never-dying spirit. She
was a living example of that spirit as she was blind for the final
third of her life, but lived as if she were not. I learned dedication
and loyalty from my grandfather who stood by his wife's side as
she lost her vision and made sure I was cared for at the same time.
I owe my life to my father. He taught me the importance of honesty
and integrity. He showed me that the way to a better life is through
hard work ...and that is ultimately more rewarding than anything
ever given to you because you have earned what is yours. These
three people were, are, and always will be my heroes ...and in
anything I do, I can only hope to make them as proud of me as I
am of them!”  With the love, support and encouragement of his paternal family, Gable
became the second person in his extended family to secure a college education and the
first to work toward a Masters degree.
Gable’s maternal grandfather was very
active with non-profit organizations. It
was here where Gable came to
understand the importance in helping
others. Before joining The Weather
Channel, Charles served as a youth
counselor at an in-patient drug
rehabilitation center for at risk teens. In addition to facilitating group discussions in the
twelve-step process, Charles tutored the teens in class work and coordinated field
trips and other social group activities. Gable said, “I just hope that I had a positive
influence on their lives”.  Charles also worked as a nursing assistant in a retirement
community.
Charles' entrepreneurial spirit led him to
open a candy vending business while
living in Atlanta. This enterprise
afforded him the ability to contribute to
Project Open Hand - a nonprofit
organization that provides meals and
services to men, women and children
afflicted with HIV/AIDS. “I strongly
believe that it is every person’s duty, to
set self aside, and reach out to our
fellow man, and offer our blessings to better their lives”.   Charles’ commitment to
the HIV/AIDS community continued after moving to State College in 1998. He
supports The AIDS Project of Centre and Clinton Counties through its annual Arts
Festival Dance and Taste of the Town fundraisers.

Faith plays an important role in Charles' life. “My dad taught me to never quit. Christ
showed me there is a reason to live”.  During his early years, Gable became active in
Christian Service Brigade (CSB), a pro-
gram very similar to The Boy Scouts of
America. The primary difference is that
CSB units are sponsored and influenced
by churches. Charles worked his way
through the program and received The
Herald of Christ award, the organiza-
tion's equivalent to Eagle Scout.  Locally,
Charles attends Calvary Baptist Church
in State College. Additionally, he is an
American Association of  State Troopers (AAST) booster and a volunteer for the
annual Central Pennsylvania Fourth Festival in State College.
